Life
I know the following post is going to "ruffle some feathers", but I don't care. I am very, very, very Pro-Life. I don't think there is any reason to have an abortion. I don't think it is a "women's right" to choose whether or not to kill a fetus. Not even if she was raped or in the case of incest. That is a human being that God breathed life into and we should not have the right to end it. Those babies can be given up for adoption. I have never been raped and gotten pregnant from it and I know it would be hell to have to carry a baby for 9 months but a decision to end an innocent LIFE should not be our decision. You can try to give me a good reason to kill a baby, but really, is there one?? That brings me to another point...why is it so hard and expensive to adopt a baby? So many people want to have a baby of their own but must wait years and spend their life savings to get one. That is ridiculous! And in case you were wondering...NO I am not a republican. I am independent and proud of it.

Ruffle them feathers, girl. I agree with your reasoning, but I also think it is based on religious convictions, and therefore shouldn't inform policy. But then, I'm a libertarian and proud of it. However, you do well to point out the hypocrisy of thinking an "accidental" baby is sacred but a "rape" baby is worthless. Life is either sacred or it isn't.

Rock on Carrie! I'm totally with you on this. If you're looking to beat up somebody, let me know! j/k. I'm also an independent voter. Personal convictions and religious convictions don't have to be separate. So go on with yo bad self!

so, david, where is the line drawn on this libertarian stuff? for instance, do you, as a libertarian, think murder should be legal? you must, or your stance on abortion is inconsistent.

By the way, I forgot to comment on your last entry, but I'm also very into junior high girl stuff. I like Justin Timberlake's music, I buy earrings at Claire's (c'mon, good prices!), and scented lotion/lip gloss rocks my world (right now I have lemongrass sage lotion on). But please, I still love Country Apple, it's a classic that will never go out of style.
Also, my friends from college and I have a trilogy teen movies that we have watched at least 30 times: 10 Things I Hate About You, Bring It On, and Centerstage. Recently we added Mean Girls to that list, and actually, I think there's an off chance Dallas might like that one too.

Val, you will find very few atheists who believe murder is acceptable. However, my guess is that most would not believe abortion is murder. I have yet to meet someone who things abortion is murder and should be outlawed who didn't have those feelings because of religious convictions. I don't think that most women who have had abortions consider themselves murderers. I could go on, but maybe I just need to make a libertarian post on my blog.

so david, the libertarian label is irrelevant really, becuase your argument is essentially the same pro-choice argument that's always used: an unborn fetus doesn't count as an independent life.

Val, I never meant to imply that my argument in practical terms was any different than the usual pro-choice argument. My only clarification was that I believe abortion should remain legal even though I personally find it morally wrong. This is not necessarily a strictly libertarian view. Republicans and democrats can have the same views. I just happen to have that view because I am a libertarian.
Carrie, sorry for using your blog as a platform for semantical arguments.

First - no feathers ruffled at all on my part :-)
I really do agree with everything you have to say ...I don't think there are any good reasons for killing unborn babies. I would venture to say that I am PRO “life” but ANTI “anti-abortion law”…
At the risk of ruffling feathers - my issues with the government outlawing abortion are as follows:
I sincerely believe its un-enforceable law and we already have too many of those. I believe that if it happens we will see a revival of cases where women bleed to death after going to underground quacks for the procedure because they can’t go to a qualified medical professional...let’s also not forget the coat hanger method that was popular before Rowe v. Wade and led to the death of countless teenagers attempting to hide pregnancies from their parents.
I also believe that if abortion is outlawed the result will be more newborns in dumpsters and more un-fit parents raising really messed up kids because it's much easier to keep an unwanted child than to place one for adoption.
Even in the year 2004 - placing for adoption carries more of a negative stigma than having an abortion for birth parents. Placing for adoption is psychologically very difficult, most women (particularly young women) can't imagine giving birth and handing a child over after going through the pain and embarrassment of a pregnancy and even if they do attempt to go through with adoption - many back out when they discover exactly how hard it is to relenquish rights after birth.
Wouldn’t it be great if, as a society, we could come to appreciate birth parents instead of ostracizing them for choosing to give their babies life? Then maybe less women would opt for hiding their pregnancies and terminating them before anyone can find out they're pregnant.
While it would be amazing if outlawed abortion would lead to more babies placed for adoption and reduced cost for adoption (because I totally agree with your comments on the cost on adoption too) I just don't think that's what would happen.
It takes a certain kind of person to place a baby and come out okay...it's something you live with for the rest of your life. But - to your point so is abortion.
I personally think a good starting place is to educate youth and our society that living with bringing a child into the world and choosing to parent that child or choosing to provide them with loving parents through adoption is a much more rewarding and more acceptable choice and life lesson than killing an unborn life.
I think it’s very, very sad that abortion even exists…..I just don’t believe that making it illegal is the answer…

Thanks for commenting Tif. I agree with you...I know as well as you do that if you make abortion illegal, if someone wants to have one, it will get done. I just saw something on TV that made me really upset. Namely, a movie star who was almost crying over a women's right and not considering the life inside. Anyway, thanks for your comments...you put it much more eloquently and thought out than I did :)

sorry I took up so much space to say it, I thought what you said was awesome....I hate when people take that "it's our body - we should be allowed to decide if we want it disfigured temporarily" stance without even mentioning or considering the life too...shame on that movie star, hope I didn't like her :-)
